Tournament Philosophy
There is a different philosophy in regards to tournaments than there is towards league games. We use the league games for individual player development and every player sees a fair amount of playing time. During tournament games, the clubs philosophy is to play to win. The coach uses his or her best discretion in obtaining that goal, and is fully supported by the club.
Players and parents need to realize that players do not always have equal time on the field. There may even be a game or two where certain players will not play at all. The coach will certainly make every effort to play everyone. However, if there is a particular critical game, the coach's strategy will be to win the game.
Parents need to know this from the outset, and encourage the team by looking at the TOTAL tournament picture, not just the one game where his/her child did not have playing time. Parents expert opinion on their own child's ability is not applicable with regard to our tournament philosophy.
Pennine United prides itself on being a club that takes responsibility and meets certain expectations. It is the responsibility of our young players and adult parents to meet all expectations as a club, a team, and a player on and off the field. It is imperative for all to refrain from altercations with officials, administrators, and other fans. All behavior, whether good or bad, reflects on the players, teams, clubs, parents, and coaches. We will remain a positive influence on our young athletes and let the coaches make any decisions regarding game situations as they see fit.
While at the hotel, all players should avoid horseplay or running in the halls. It is recommended that the players do not swim between games to reserve their energy. If any player wants to swim, the evening would be the best time after all matches for the day are played.
Curfew for teams 12 and under is 10:00pm. Curfew for teams 13 and up is 11:00pm. Each player and parent knows what is best for them or their child. Proper rest is important and plays a significant factor in a child's ability to perform the next day. Proper nutrition is also an important part of player performance.Try to eat healthy, avoid fast foods, and drink plenty of liquids. Fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates are recommended throughout the weekend.
We all look forward to wonderful tournament weekends. They are weekends filled with fun, laughter, and presumably competition highs and lows. Let us all do our best to make tournament competition an exciting and competitive time where our athletes and parents alike can have a safe and enjoyable experience.
